Faces – the most challenging cane of all! But an investment you will have for years to come. This class helps to understand shape, proportion, and coloring to create a life-like image with personality. Individual component canes includes eyes, nose, lips, brow and optional cheeks (as time permits). Also includes a demo of how to adjust and embellish a finished face cane for use in work. Prerequisite! – this is an advanced class. Students should have complete knowledge of a Skinner Blend and previous cane building and reduction experience.

Materials needed 1 ¼ lb translucent clay, black, white, brown, ecru, eye color and pearl clay, work surface, blade, pasta machine, acrylic roller with handle. All other materials and tools supplied.

Angel Portraits on Canvas

Paint with clay! This appliquéd array of stamped, molded, shaded and textured shapes incorporates use of all the elements and principles of design. You’ll have your choice of an angel sweet caned face or an ivory cast beauty. Class instructions are equipped with several patterns or learn the design dynamics to create your own!
FEE: 6 hrs $120 Class fee includes an 8x10 set of angel arms (a $20 value).
Materials needed: White and pearl clay, Liquid Sculpey, 8x10 or 9x12 canvas (no staples on sides), work surface, blade, pasta machine, roller small mixing cup and palette knife. Please bring a heat gun if you have one. All other materials supplied.

Art meets Doll in this feminine reflection of stories wrapped up in time. The winged doll tells a personal journey through a poem scribed on the wound spindle. Polymer is the ultimate building block as the body and face take form in your hands. A wondrous mixed media expression.
FEE: 6 hrs. $120 Includes spindle and a 5x7 impression stamp for texturing wings (a $20 value).
Materials needed: Polymer clay white & translucent, work surface (preferably tile), flexible polymer blade, pasta machine and acrylic roller with handle, stiff bristle brush for antiquing, soft rag. Students are welcome to bring clay surface designs, canes or found objects to include in the assemblage. All additional materials supplied by the instructor.

Make your own version of Barbara’s most popular designs – without the intensive labor of canes! The first step is creating a wonderful focal with premade everything – shaded color, graphic or floral canes and a sassy face. You’ ll learn how to crop, select and place the elements for effective balance and focus. Special attention stressed in determining form and shape while accommodating the mechanical functions of the design.

Big, bold and modern, these earrings are show stoppers! The better news is that options for highlights are essentially scrap from your ‘surface design’ table. You will learn the secrets of creating a few key caned elements, and how to balance a design with texture. The earrings are completed with embellished spiral ear wires integrated into the design.
FEE: 5 hrs $85 Class fee includes a 3x5 texture stamp (combined with supplies, a $20 value).
Materials needed: black, white and translucent clay, work surface, flexible polymer blade, pasta machine, and roller. Students should bring or arrange to borrow wire tools including a flush cutter, round nose and chain nose pliers. All other materials including bead accents and Sterling wire are supplied for two pairs of earrings. Gold filled wire also available at a surcharge.

Metals are all the rage! Hammer , pound, pierce and lash components together to compliment your polymer pieces. This class focuses on the techniques of cold connecting the metal components. Design emphasis is on creating shapes integrated with contrasting elements.

Materials needed: Ball pein hammer, steel block, piercing placement tool, two hole punch. Students should bring or arrange to borrow wire tools including a flush cutter, round nose and chain nose pliers. Metals and sterling wire are supplied for two pairs of earrings. Create as many Divas as you wish with this popular expression of a female form. The class focuses on making the doll, but finished work can be worn as a pendant, pin, or captured in a frame. Working in translucent clays, this technique invites inclusions. A crash course on molds is also included as you enjoy Barbara’s collection of faces, textures and script.
FEE: $4 hrs $65 Class fee includes templates, and a 3x5 impression stamp for texturing (a $16 value).
Materials needed: Polymer clay – 2 blocks translucent, work surface (preferably tile), flexible polymer blade, craft knife, pasta machine and acrylic roller with handle, bone folder, stiff bristle brush for antiquing, soft rag, 400 & 600 grit wet sandpaper, small dish for sanding. Develop Barbara’s favorite Brand of Mokume Gane one step further with design by intention. Since random mokume slices have a delightful element of surprise, just imagine what you can do with an intentional element added just where you want it – even after the slicing! This class also explores the use of an alternative to real gold leaf while still creating luminous, iridescent and metallic layers. New design applications for 2012.
